Pie + Puppets = this fun little craft to make with your kids or students! Whenever Thanksgiving comes up, I think of 3 things:

  1. How thankful I am for all the blessings in this life
  2. Mashed Potatoes
  3. PIE!!!

Initially, we were going to make a pie slice with pom-poms for berries, but we didn’t have enough pom-poms, so we made these little puppets instead. And boy, am I glad we did! They were a hit with my daughter and I hope you and your kids can enjoy them too!

Materials

  • Orange & brown felt (if you don’t have felt , paper works equally as well!)
  • Cardstock
  • Googly eyes
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Black marker
  • Glue
  • Tape
  • Scissors

Directions

  1. Draw a 3D pie slice on a piece of cardstock and cut it out. This will serve as the backing of the puppet or a stencil.
  2. Use the cardstock pie slice to trace the shape onto the orange felt (or paper). Use a marker to make the lines darker and then cut the shape out.

3. Trace and cut out a small rectangle and “half a cloud” shape from the brown felt. These will be the back and the crust of your pie.

4. Glue the rectangle down first, then the “cloud crust” to the cardstock.

5. Paste the orange part of the pie onto the cardstock.

6. Then, glue the googly eyes down on the orange pie.

7. Use the marker to draw a mouth.

8. Next, take a cotton ball and twist one edge of it. This will be the whipped cream on top of the pie!

9. Glue the cotton ball whipped cream on top of the pie.

10. Tape a popsicle stick to the back.

11. Last but not least, have a blast with your new pumpkin pie friends!

Puppets are a FANTASTIC way to get your kids’ and students’ imaginations running wild! What would two slices of pie even talk about? (A lot, actually. And I only know because of what my toddler told me… 😂).

I’ll also be sharing one of my all-time favorite songs that I sing with my students and daughter later this week, so stay tuned! (Yes, it has to do with pie… ha!)

Anywho, this craft also reminded me that I have to start planning a Thanksgiving meal for my family! I’m in charge of everything except for the turkey (thank you, Mom 🤣) so I better start making some decisions quick! aHH!

Please feel free to tag me on Instagram if you and your kiddos end up making these little puppets – I would love to see! And as always, happy crafting and music-making!
