ABOUT ME & ABOUT THIS BLOG

Thanks so much for stopping by! My name is Hannah. I am a wife, mama, music educator, songwriter, crafter, and now… blogger! I absolutely love helping kids to develop their musicality and creativity. I’m currently in my 8th year of teaching elementary general/vocal music and truly, not a day goes by that I am not inspired or encouraged by my students’ ideas, excitement, and confidence that they bring to class. It brings me joy to see them experience the joy of music!

I’ve also been cherishing all the moments I’ve had so far with my own child – teaching her songs, making crafts together, and just seeing her own imagination take flight. I believe that making music and creating are central to a child’s way of being and should be nourished in the best way possible.

I wanted to start this blog to share ideas with other grown-ups of simple and fun music activities and crafts they could do with the curious, energetic, amazing kids in their lives!

ON MUSIC

For those adults who may not consider themselves “singers,” “musicians,” or “musically inclined,” I want to tell you – you are more musical than you know! Group music classes, performance ensembles, and private instrument lessons for your child are obviously such wonderful opportunities for them to develop their musicality, but the foundation of music education actually begins in the home. While it may seem a bit daunting or overwhelming for some, there are actually so many simple but engaging activities you can do with your child to help strengthen their skills and discover the joy of music!

ON CREATING

I have so many memories from my childhood of making crafts with my family and on my own – folding and cutting out paper doll chains with my mom, tracing silhouettes of our profiles with my sister, making glue out of rice with my dad, making paper out of… paper (I saw it on TV, okay?!). There is something so magical once the creative juices get flowing and I think it is so cool to see that process play out in kids. For a lot of younger children, they are unhindered in their creations and although often times messy, those creations can be so fantastic (and sometimes hilarious). There is also something so special about getting to create with family and friends. While I certainly wouldn’t expect anyone to keep every single craft they’ve made with their kid (if I did that, I would probably have to rent out a storage unit by the time mine’s in college), it’s my hope that one day, when that tiny human becomes a not-so-tiny human, they’ll have some sweet memories to look back on with their grown-up. Memories like drenching pieces of paper with glue or getting glitter EVERYWHERE. 🙂

OTHER STUFF (that’s not so important but perhaps, might be interesting)

This is our dog, Dwight. He might make a cameo in a post from time to time. (And yes, he’s named after Dwight Schrute, from our favorite show, The Office.)
A page from my 5th grade yearbook. My favorite foods are still the same.

Chucks were my shoe of choice at my wedding reception. I have never not owned a pair since high school.
