It’s that time of year for basking in the sun, floating in the pool, and devouring one of the best summertime treats – popsicles! Although you could certainly decorate these popsicle puppets with other things like crayons or markers, we enjoyed using watercolors to create that “popsicley” look (I just invented that word) and we hope you enjoy it too!
Materials
- Paper (watercolor for the puppets, scrap for the template)
- Watercolor
- Paintbrushes
- Pencil
- Black marker
- Popsicle sticks
- Tape
- Scissors
Directions
1. Create a popsicle outline template using a scrap piece of paper. (I found that the easiest way to make it symmetrical is to fold the piece of paper in half and trace/cut out the half of the popsicle shape.)
2. Use this template to trace the shapes onto the watercolor paper. We were able to fit 3 on each sheet.
3. I ended up cutting each sheet so that there was just 1 popsicle outline on each piece (easier for my toddler).
4. Paint each popsicle however you’d like! We tried using a range of colors (1-4) with different designs.
5. Let the popsicles dry and maybe eat some real ones in the meantime!
6. Once the popsicles are dry, use the marker to draw faces and trace over the outline.
7. Cut each popsicle out and tape a popsicle stick to the back of each one.
8. Enjoy creating silly scenarios with these popsicle puppets!
My daughter and I had so much fun making these together and playing with them afterward. Puppets are such an incredible avenue for kids to let their imaginations run wild and boy, did my daughter’s run wild with these popsicles (check out my Instagram post for a video, haha)!
Thanks again for tuning in and I hope you have had a great first part to your summer!
Happy crafting & music-making!
