My daughter LOVES strawberries and she also really loves paint! I love the idea of painting using different objects (if you can’t already tell from some of our other crafts 🙂 ). I thought it would be fun to put it all together and that’s how I came up with these Strawberry Sponge Prints! We made ours on just a plain piece of paper, but I could see these being a really fun way to create cards or even wrapping paper!

Materials

  • paper (thick enough to withstand paint)
  • red/pink & green paint
  • sponge
  • black marker
  • scissors
  • paint brush
  • paper plate

Directions

  1. Cut the sponge into a strawberry shape. We made ours about 2″ in length which was big enough for my toddler to print with, but not so big that the strawberries looked genetically modified 😛 (but if that’s the effect you’re going for, go for it… haha!).
  2. Pour the red or pink paint onto a plate and dip one side of the sponge into it. I actually tried to attach a cut paper straw to one side of the sponge in an attempt to create a handle and “lessen the mess.” It didn’t work, but it turned out just fine!

3. Then, press the sponge (paint side down) onto the paper. Lift the sponge up and you should see a “strawberry-esque” shape! It’s best to reload the paint after every print, but no worries if you or our kid forgets (or if you just have a very strong-willed toddler, heh!).

4. Let the prints dry and do something fun while you wait, like go get ice cream (like we did! Do it!). Once the strawberries are dry, use the green paint and paintbrush to create leaves at the top of each strawberry.

5. Lastly, use a black marker to draw the seeds. Just make sure that when you’re finished you have something sweet on hand to eat – since you’ll probably be craving it after making these… just kidding! Maybe… hehe!

I hope you and your kids enjoy making these! As always, feel free to send me your pictures or tag me on Instagram, @crayonsandmelodies ! I absolutely love seeing what you create!

On another note, my school year will be over in just a couple of short weeks, so be prepared for more crafts, doodles, and music! I’m planning on doing a weekly “summer singalong” on Instagram Live, so stay tuned for more details on that 🙂

Until next time, happy crafting and music-making!
