Camping is a great opportunity to create some memorable moments with family and friends (and so is crafting😉)! My daughter’s only experience with “camping” so far was actually inside the house during the pandemic. And while it wasn’t “real camping” (though I hope she’ll experience that someday), we definitely had a lot of fun building a fort tent in the basement, devouring microwave s’mores, singing camp songs around a fake fire, and making our first version of this craft! We’ve since improved the part of this craft with a tent that folds in and out to reveal someone inside!

Materials

  • Colored paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • Markers or crayons
  • Glitter glue (optional)

Directions

  1. Choose a piece of paper for the tent. Fold it in half lengthwise and cut along the fold.

2. Take one piece and lay it lengthwise across the table. Fold it in half (left to right).

3. Unfold it and cut along the crease in the middle. Take one piece (save the other!) and fold it in half once more and open it up to create another crease.

4. Fold the top left and top right corners towards the middle crease to create triangles on either side. Make sure to cut off the bottom rectangle. This will be the front of the tent.

4. Now, take the piece that you cut but didn’t fold and set that flat on the table in front of you. Take your triangular piece and line up the middle with the left side of the other piece. Trace the angled line on the right.

5. Slide the triangle over to the right side of the rectangle and trace another angled line on the right. This will create the side of the tent.

6. Now, glue the triangle onto the left side of the other piece of paper. The right part of the triangle should line up with the triangle you traced on the other piece.

7. You can now create your camping scene by cutting other pieces of colored paper to make things like grass, trees, and a campfire (or anything else you’d like)!

8. Once your scene is in place, it is time to add a friend or friends inside the tent. My daughter and I each drew our dog, Dwight, and cut him out, along with a blanket for him to sleep in. You can also do it just by drawing under the tent flaps!

9. We made the mistake of adding our glitter glue moon and stars before the previous step (because that started to get glitter everywhere, ha!) but if you have it and would like to add them, now would be the perfect time 🙂

We hope you and your kiddos enjoy making this craft together and make sure to sing some camp songs and eat s’mores while you’re at it! 😎

Happy crafting and music making!
