After having gone to a sunflower festival this past weekend, how could we NOT make a sunflower craft? We had fun using different materials to create the different textures of my favorite flowers!

Materials

  • White paper
  • Yellow tissue paper (or construction paper)
  • Black and/or brown paint
  • Sponge (cut up into smaller pieces)
  • Pencil & crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Directions

  1. Draw or trace some circles onto a piece of white paper. These will the middle of the sunflowers.
  2. Dip a sponge into some black (or dark brown) paint and dab it in and on the circles. It is okay if you go over the pencil lines since they are just there for a guide.

3. While the circles are drying, work on the petals. Fan fold the yellow tissue or construction paper to the desired width.

4. Trace a petal shape on the top fold. Then, cut out the paper layers using the petal shape as a guide.

5. Use a glue stick to glue the petals down on the white paper, using the circles as a guide. The ends of the petals should overlap the circle line.

6. Using crayons and/or markers, draw the sunflower stems and leaves, and any backgrounds or insects you’d like to add.

7. Once the painted circles are dry, cut them out and glue them in the middle of the petals.

8. Enjoy your sunflowers for as long as you’d like!

My daughter enjoyed an ice cream cone at the festival, which is why she drew an ice cream cone in her picture. I love all the details she added!

We hope you enjoy making this craft together and that it will continue to bring you bright joy for the rest of your summer!

Also, I may or may not have a little song coming your way about a sunflower…😉

Happy crafting and music making!
